Extreme Heat - New York Water - Residential

Extreme Heat Protection

When a heat advisory or excessive heat warning is issued and heat index values reach levels that may pose health risks, Liberty closely monitors conditions and customer needs across our service territory.

During periods of extreme heat, Liberty will not disconnect residential water service for nonpayment while these conditions persist. These protections apply to all residential customers for the duration of the extreme heat event and are intended to support health and safety during dangerous weather conditions.

If you are experiencing financial hardship or need assistance during extreme heat, help may be available. Customers are encouraged to contact Liberty to discuss payment options or support resources.

Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Hot weather can take a real toll on your body, especially during prolonged periods of high temperatures and humidity. Taking a few simple steps can help you stay cool, stay healthy, and stay connected when the heat rises.

Tips to Help You Stay Cool and Comfortable

  • Spend time in air-conditioned locations when possible, such as libraries, community centers, malls, or senior centers. Many communities open cooling centers during extreme heat events.
  • Keep curtains or blinds closed during peak sunlight hours to reduce indoor heat.
  • Take cool showers or sponge baths.
  • Use fans to improve air circulation, especially during cooler nighttime hours.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Drink water regularly, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Check In on Others

Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for certain individuals. Please help keep others safe by:

  • Staying in touch with family, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults, young children, and anyone with health concerns.
  • Never leaving children or pets alone in a parked vehicle, even for a short time.

Heat-Related Illness

Extended periods of hot and humid weather can interfere with the body’s ability to cool itself. This can lead to serious health conditions, including heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

People at Higher Risk

Some individuals are more vulnerable to heat-related illness, including:

  • Older adults
  • Infants and young children
  • People with heart disease, diabetes, or circulation problems
  • Individuals taking certain prescription medications
  • Anyone not accustomed to extreme heat

Warning Signs to Watch For

Seek medical assistance immediately if someone experiences:

  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Extremely high body temperature
  • Nausea or vomiting
